Code of Ethics

The Code of Ethics of a profession states the basis for all professional conduct of its members. Guiding Principles encourage continued development of the profession and assist in advancing professionalism, promoting discussion, and encouraging research. The following Guiding Principles and standards for professional practice comprise the Code of Ethics for Educational Therapists. Members of the Association of Educational Therapists are responsible for upholding and advancing these principles.

AET Bylaws

The Association of Educational Therapists' mission is to benefit society by providing certification and training to members who serve individuals with learning challenges, advancing the profession of educational therapy worldwide, and establishing ethical standards for the practice of educational therapy. National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities (NJCLD)

Founded in 1975, the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities (NJCLD) is a national committee of representatives of organizations committed to the education and welfare of individuals with learning disabilities. The Association of Educational Therapists has been an active member of the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities since 2002.

The mission of the NJCLD is to provide multi-organizational leadership and resources to optimize outcomes for individuals with learning disabilities. In service of this mission, the committee:

  • Facilitates communication, collaboration, and consensus among member organizations.
  • Identifies and addresses needs in research, policy, and professional education and development related to learning disabilities.
  • Provides an interdisciplinary forum to increase communication and understanding among educational organizations, community, and governmental agencies at the national, state, and local levels.
  • Acts as an advocate and makes recommendations on critical issues affecting individuals with learning disabilities.
  • Develops and disseminates statements, reports, and other resources in the area of learning disabilities to clarify issues, influence policy, improve practice, and increase knowledge. AET publishes these reports regularly in The Educational Therapist.

The Entreprenuership for Educational Therapists (EET) 2025 cohort meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 9:00-10:30am (PT)/12:00-1:30pm (ET).  The cohort runs anually from August - May. Helping Students Access College Disability Services:

A Guide for Educational Therapists

This webinar will share the differences between high school and college disability support systems, the
range of accommodations available to students, and the step-by-step process for securing those
accommodations in higher education. Participants will leave equipped with practical strategies to better
prepare neurodiverse students for independence, including building self-advocacy, executive functioning,
and organizational skills. Educational therapists will also gain concrete tools, such as conversation prompts
and documentation guidance, that can be applied immediately in their practice to support both students
and families.


Susana Thengvall is an Assistant Director and Disability Specialist at the University of San Francisco’s
Student Disability Services, where she supports neurodiverse students in accessing equitable learning
opportunities. With a Master’s in Educational Counseling from USC and experience in higher education
disability services, she is passionate about empowering students to recognize their strengths and thrive in
college.


Learning Outcomes - Participants will be able to:
 Explain how IDEA, Section 504, and ADA protections shift responsibility from schools to students in
college.
 Identify the most common academic, housing, dining, and technology accommodations available in
higher education.
 Coach students in essential transition skills, including self-advocacy, communication with professors,
and executive functioning strategies.
